What does hosting mean?

When you want to have your website published on the World Wide Web (www) for all to see you must have it "hosted" on a Web Server (a computer permanently connected to the internet and equipped to send out Web pages on request).

As an extra service for About Time Web Design clients we can set up hosting for your website. This is an added convenience for those that own a website but do not have the time to learn how to run one. So, if you'd rather be doing other things, don't worry...we'll do it for you!

Our Standard Hosting Package is $25 Cdn/month Currency Converter with a minimum 6 month contract required. It includes such features as;

• Free domain registration/transfer

• 2000 MBs of Data Transfer

• 5 E-mail Accounts

For those websites that require more (because they have more pages, more traffic,e-commerce or a database, etc.) we will determine what your specific needs are and find an appropriate hosting solution for you.

What about free hosting?

Although it is true that you can have your site set up on a free hosting service there are a number of drawbacks to this idea...

1. They may place banners or pop-up advertisements on each of your pages
2. They generally won't let you use your own domain name (www.yourname.com) instead they will give you a long subdomain name such as www.their_name.com/freepages/yourname
3. You may or may not get your own email address
4. You are limited to how large your site can be
5. You are limited to the amount of traffic coming to your site
6. If they close up shop you will need to find a new hosting service and this means a new domain name that you must print on all your marketing materials and tell all your contacts as well

In general free sites are fine for personal sites but are not recommended for business use.
